Murray Hill

Murray Hill is named after the Murray Family, Quaker merchants who built a grand mansion on what is now Park Avenue and 36th Street. Today, another grand old mansion speaks to the exclusive history of the area- the Morgan Library and Museum. Compared to many other parts of the city, change has come slowly to this area, which is dominated by row houses and occasional modern developments. The more southerly area of Murray Hill is affectionately called “Curry Hill” for the density of Indo-Pak restaurants and grocery stores lining 3rd Avenue. Higher education is also abundant in the area, with CUNY, Stern College for Women and Yeshiva University all residents. At the most Northern point, the noble beauty of Grand Central Station and the Chrysler Building on 42nd street bear witness to the glories of decades past in an area surprisingly untouched by the rapid changes of the city.
