The Bronx
South East Bronx
The Southeast Bronx is home to the largest park in New York City (Pelham Bay Park) and the oldest residential area in the borough, Westchester Square. First settled in 1654 by English sea captains and sailors who built it into a river port, Westchester Square became an important commercial hub once again with the arrival of the subway line in the early 20th Century.
One of the most curious neighborhood names belongs to Throggs Neck, named for the peninsula upon which much of it sits. Named for the original landowner “Throckmorton”, it was soon referred to as “Frogs’ Neck” during the Revolutionary War and today “Throggs”. The area has always appealed to visitors and residents, having been a summer resort in the 1800’s, and has weathered economic ups and downs without ever falling into disrepair. Waterfront properties with bridge views are perennially popular.
The Southeast Bronx Includes: Westchester Square, Parkchester, Pelham Bay, Throggs Neck, Soundview, Castle Hill.
